Editor’s note: Some locations in Sullivan County have been changed
INDIANA (WTWO/WAWV) — As we brace for some extreme cold and more winter weather over the later part of the week, some local organizations are offering a place to stay warm here in the valley.
Reach Services announced Tuesday that they’re offering warming services at Pathways Day Center, open 24 hours beginning Thursday at 5 P.M. It will be open through Monday based upon wind chill feeling like zero or below. Meals and snacks will be provided.
In addition, IU Health Positive Link announced that they will have an office location in use for a daytime warming center in Terre Haute from 8:30 A.M. to 5 P.M. That’s located at 100 South 7th Street at the lower level of the building.
In Sullivan County, there will be four warming centers on standby from midnight Thursday evening until Sunday, Christmas day. At that time the centers will be re-evaluated to see if they’re still needed.
The locations will be at the Sullivan County EMA Office, Hymera Jackson Fire Department, Thunderbird Fire Department in Shelburn, and the Community Building in Merom.
Additionally, JB Pirtle said two backup locations are standing by should they be needed. The Sullivan City Park Shelter House will serve as a backup to the Sullivan County EMA Office, while the Thunderbird Fire Department in Farmersburg will serve as a backup to the Thunderbird Fire Department in Shelburn center.

In Greene County, EMA Director Roger Axe has requested churches in the county open warming shelters from 6 p.m. Thursday night through 8 a.m. Friday.
“Because Greene County is a rural county it could be safer for people to travel to churches in time of need,” Axe said. “What better way to express the meaning of Christmas to extend a helping hand to those in dire need?”
