TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — Area high schoolers planted a tree Friday in memory of a classmate.
The tree was planted outside Booker T. Washington High School in Terre Haute by members of the Bring Change 2 Mind Club who wanted to not only honor their friend but to also raise awareness about suicide prevention.
“It’s important to me because I lost somebody that was a really good friend of mine,” student Bryce Tompkins said. “He was like a brother to me, pretty much. So, I look back at this and it reminds me of him.”
Art educator Christine Ellis said the tree will serve as a reminder that suicide prevention is everyone’s responsibility.
“Our tree is a symbol for the community, branches out, it’s a reminder that we all have a responsibility to suicide prevention,” she said. “It’s happened one too many times in our own community.”
The Bring Change 2 Mind Club focuses on mental health.
