SULLIVAN COUNTY, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — Superintendent of Northeast School Corporation, Dr. Mark Baker, has announced his intention to retire at the end of the school year.

According to Baker, his last official day would be on July 31 this summer. Baker said he intends to retire at that time, and wont be pursuing jobs in other school districts. But, Baker added, he’s agreed to stick around to assist with the handing-off of responsibilities to whoever is hired as the next superintendent, which could extend his time with the organization.
The superintendent said there is still a lot of time left in the year, but that he made the announcement due to contractual deadlines to notify the Board of Trustees.
Last year, Baker oversaw the school corporation’s creation of their own police department, when asked how that program has gone so far this year, Baker said it has been very successful.
“It’s been great, we have three officers, and they greet students and parents everyday, and know a lot of the kids by name, its been a successful program,” Baker said.
Baker arrived to the district as the Hymera Elementary Principal in the 2000-2001 school year, Baker said he worked in that role for seven years before taking on the superintendent role where he’s served for the last 17 years.
