VERMILLION COUNTY, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — One man has been arrested following a string of events Friday that began with a reported hit-and-run.
The Vermillion County Sheriff’s Office said they got a call around 2:30 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 11, that the driver of a Dodge pickup truck had been sideswiped by a Ford minivan near County Road 450 south and State Road 63, near Hillsdale.
An officer speaking with the driver of the truck reported being told that following the sideswipe incident both vehicles had stopped, but that two people got out of the van and had approached the truck in a hostile manner. This caused the driver of the truck to leave and call the police.
At this same time, a second 9-1-1 call came into dispatch from the driver of the van reported to be part of the incident. That driver was reporting that his passenger had since taken the van from him at knifepoint and fled towards Montezuma.
A Parke County deputy located the Ford minivan in Montezuma and arrested the driver who was later identified as 30-year-old Jesse V. Schane of Brazil.
The minivan’s original driver informed police that, while riding in his van as a passenger, Schane had jerked the wheel intentionally causing the initial striking of the truck. The driver also reported that Schane, while stealing the van, allegedly struck him in the face. The driver was taken to a hospital for treatment of facial injuries.
Schane was arrested for armed robbery resulting in injury, battery, and auto theft. He was taken to Vermillion County Jail on a $50,000 bond.
